The addition of offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel is set to transform the Chargers' offense like no other.
McDaniel was hired as the Chargers' offensive play caller for no other reason, and while all eyes are still on him and his offense, he knows it takes a village. On Wednesday, McDaniel spoke to the media and credited quarterback coach Shane Day with helping Justin Herbert and with being named OC for the Chargers.
“Being able to really lean on Shane has been monumental for me," McDaniel said.
"Realistically, relying on that relationship as we all are…But it’s been awesome.” “The accelerated teaching…he [Day] knew exactly how everything was framed. The teaching was immediate and he could immediately teach it for me.”
McDaniel may be entering his first season in Los Angeles, but that is not the case for Day.
Day is in his second stint with the Chargers and is heading into the 2026 season as the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He served in those roles during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Last season, Day was solely the quarterbacks coach.
Day has established himself as one of Herbert's more trusted confidants and mentors. Herbert was among those who wanted Day to return to the staff after he left for the Texans in 2023.
The 51-year-old has helped guide Herbert to two Pro Bowls with the Chargers and has helped him refine his deep-passing mechanics, pre-snap disguised coverage reads, and overall efficiency.
Entering the 2026 season, Herbert has massive expectations on his shoulders, and with McDaniel and Day by his side, he should be in a position to meet them.
