How Heretic turns a faith-driven visit into a terrifying psychological game

Heretic turns a seemingly ordinary missionary visit into a tense psychological thriller. The film follows two young Mormon missionaries, portrayed by Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East. They visit Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), an eccentric man who expresses interest in their faith. However, as they discuss their beliefs with Reed, the missionaries realize he has something far more sinister in mind.

The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024, before receiving a wider release in November of the same year. It earned Hugh Grant a Best Actor nomination at the Golden Globes, the Critics’ Choice Awards, and the BAFTA Awards. The movie also received a Best Screenplay nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Heretic is a movie that looks at religion and tries to have a serious conversation about faith. The writers have cited Inherit the Wind and Contact as inspirations, praising both films for exploring religion and faith in an accessible, thought-provoking way.

Bryan Wood revealed that the movie was written after the death of his father, prompting him to examine questions about death and the afterlife. Resurrection and death serve as important plot points in the movie as well, with Dr. Reed taking a cynical approach to descriptions of what happens after death.
