Couples need time to be alone and strengthen their bond. If they have other people stringing along, that becomes almost impossible to do.

Spending time with family and friends is both important and healthy, but when two people are married, they are each other's primary family and each other's priority. Life can get messy really easily, and they need to have a strong relationship to avoid becoming just roommates and feeling like they are just cohabiting the same space without feeling connected. Getting away together every now and then is an excellent way for couples to reconnect and come back stronger to face all the everyday challenges.

When my brother and I were younger, my parents rarely ever took time to be alone with each other, which is understandable, since they had two young children. They managed for a few years, but once we were old enough, they started to go on mini weekend trips. They would leave us with our grandparents, and they would go away for the date of their anniversary, for instance. My mom struggled a little with feeling like she was leaving us behind, but the truth is we were both safe and cared for, and they needed time to be together on their own. They never stopped loving each other, that's for sure, but having those little moments together gave them the chance to feel like they were dating again and come back home renewed to face the obstacles of raising a family.

We can understand why someone would be upset if the whole family suddenly decided to tag along on a weekend getaway that was originally meant to be for a couple, which is exactly what happened to a man and his wife. To put it mildly, he was not happy. Having the family interrupt the couple's time makes for an annoyance, and it's necessary to establish clear boundaries so they know when it's the moment ot retire and leave them alone.
