Hey everyone! A couple of days ago I posted a screenshot of my win streak after fixing my study routine, and a lot of you asked me to share the exact checklist I’ve been running through in my head during games.

I realized a simple checklist wasn't enough to cover the whole journey, so I spent the last couple of days expanding it into a complete, structured roadmap breaking down exactly what to focus on at every stage from 600 Elo all the way up to 1400+.

Since a lot of you requested the deep dive, here is the expanded system split into the core milestones:

Stage 0: The Defensive Zone (600 - 800 Elo)

• Rule 1: The Safety Check (Look Before You Touch) – Spend 5 seconds checking piece safety before every single move. Ask: "Is my targeted square defended?" and "Did my opponent's move open up a line of attack against me?"

• Rule 2: Protect Your Loose Pieces – Every undefended piece is a target waiting to be hit by a fork, pin, or skewer. Scan your board on every turn to ensure your pieces are defended by pawns or teammates.

• Rule 3: The Center Rules Everything – Control of the central squares (e4, d4, e5, d5) controls the flow of the entire game. Place a pawn in the center on move 1 or 2 and activate your minor pieces to support it.

Stage 1: The Golden Laws (800 - 1000 Elo)

• Rule 4: Control the Center Quad – Occupy or control the central squares early. Make early pawn moves that directly control or occupy central space.

• Rule 5: Knights Before Bishops – Knights belong on their natural developing squares (f3, c4, f6, c6) before bishops commit to a diagonal. Develop your knights toward the center first to control space and maintain flexibility.

• Rule 6: Get Your King to Safety – An uncastled king in an open board is a magnet for enemy attacks and tactical sacrifices. Castle early (usually within your first 7 to 10 moves) to connect your rooks and secure your king.

(Note: I also built out complete operational blocks for Stage 2: The Tactical Trigger (1000-1200), Stage 3: The Endgame Engine (1200-1400), Stage 4: Danya's Piece Safety System, and Stage 5: The ELO Preservation System covering physical and mental game day readiness).

I want to make sure these milestone breakdowns are as practical as possible for players grinding through these rating bands. For anyone currently in the 600–1200 range, do these specific rules align with what you struggle with most in your games, or is there another concept that gave you a breakthrough?
