So the readers of this book understand why this book triggers so much anger in so many people. But I couldn't help but wonder, how on earth were those kids able to forgive the parents? I know no one actually said that they forgave the parents, but it was so weird to see how a family like that could still support the parents, care for them and still stay together.
And then it occurred to me. I come from a dysfunctional family, (nothing like the one in the book, but pretty shitty nevertheless) and we never experienced love in that house. I don't think any member of our family loved anyone in our family. At best, we tolerated each other which if I'm being honest, was pretty rare. In my head, what my parents did was so bad that it drifted us siblings apart. We ended up hating each other and our parents (though no one had the courage to admit it so we pretended to be normal).
So what kept the Walls family together was love. Through all the hardships and madness, they were willing to stick together and give a shit about each other especially about parents, because there was love. It's simple as that. And man, that made me sad.
