We now officially have a full, confirmed name for the object of our longstanding RPG longing, and it’s The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Publisher Bethesda revealed that title in a short video this week, giving us the first substantial news on its upcoming blockbuster for the first time since it was revealed in—cue the theatrical splutters—2018.
Civilizations have risen and fallen since then. Stars have formed and burned out. We even (very nearly) got GTA 6. The announcement came 15 years to the day after Skyrim launched, which is horrifying for anybody who remembers the day Skyrim launched.
Watch: The Elder Scrolls VI Official Name RevealIt’s not just a subtitle, though. Ever since 1996’s The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall, the subtitles in this series have been a reference to the region the game takes place in. Lore experts will already be familiar with Sentinel as a city within the Hammerfell region where that 1996 game took place. What the title reveals, then, is that we’re heading back to Hammerfell, marking the first time the series returns to a previously featured locale.

Located southwest of Skyrim, Hammerfell is an absolutely vast and uniquely diverse area of the Elder Scrolls world map. The series’ Fandom page describes “vast jungles, wooded mountain ranges, subtropical grasslands, humid swamps, and arid deserts.” Probably why Bethesda Game Studios chose it, then.

All of this lines up with earlier reports through 2026 about what BGS had planned. Those reports also suggested that this game will touch on the history of the titular Elder Scrolls themselves.
And that’s it, for now. There’s no release date, nor any calendar dates to mark for the next PR beat. We’d hope this name reveal does at least indicate that further updates will arrive more frequently than every eight years, but to be honest, we need some time to contemplate that Skyrim was 15 years ago, so no rush.
