As the price of fuel continues to climb, the question now is: Is it cheaper to fly or drive from Johannesburg to Durban this December?

The cost largely depends on the number of people travelling.

If you are a solo traveller, then it will be cheaper to fly from Johannesburg to Durban this December,

However, if you are travelling with friends or family then it would be more cost effective to drive.  

Fuel is the biggest factor to consider this year.

In October, the price of fuel hiked yet again. Currently, the price of 95 Petrol is R30.25 a litre inland and R29.38 at the coast. The trip is around 570km one way. Take a look at how much a roadtrip from Johannesburg to Durban costs here.

COST OF DRIVING 

  • Fuel: Estimated at 46 litres, works out to R1 380 each way
  • Tolls: R347.50 single journey

So, around R1 730 each way or R3 460 return.

However, if you’re splitting this with friends or family you will essentially be saving. 

COST OF FLYING

December airfares are generally higher than the cheaper deals you would see in other months due to it being peak season.

A flight from Johannesburg, either OR Tambo or Lanseria to Durban’s King Shaka Airport, is at it’s cheapest currently around R1 500, without luggage and any other extras.

However, those offers are likely to be only at certain times of the day and on certain days of the week. 

Therefore, you would need to budget between R1 500 to R3 000 for a return flight to spend the festive season in Durban.
