DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn wants audiences to enjoy individual DC Universe projects on their own merits without treating every release as homework for a future crossover event.

Gunn pointed to the upcoming Man of Tomorrow as part of a larger story while emphasizing that other projects should stand on their own. He addressed the discussion on Threads after fans questioned what the DCU’s growing slate of movies and shows was building toward.

Gunn explained that the franchise combines standalone stories with projects connected through a broader narrative.

“I said some stories would be standalone like the Guardians movies were (which is what Clayface is) and some stories would have part of a larger narrative structure, which is what the Superman Saga is,” Gunn wrote.

He added that each part of the larger story should work independently, whether audiences have watched every other DCU release or not.

Gunn also explained that the Superman storyline begins with Superman and continues through Man of Tomorrow and beyond. Although characters introduced in other projects may become part of that narrative, he does not want those earlier stories to exist solely to establish future appearances.

James Gunn explains how Man of Tomorrow fits into his bigger DCU vision

Gunn’s comments offer a clearer picture of how DC Studios intends to build its shared universe. This approach will continue with Man of Tomorrow, which Gunn has described as the next chapter in the Superman Saga rather than a conventional Superman sequel. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027.

“It’s exciting seeing things START to come together and all that makes me even more excited for what we have in store for everyone in Man of Tomorrow,” he wrote on Threads.

David Corenswet will return as Superman, while Nicholas Hoult will reprise his role as Lex Luthor. The story will bring the two characters together against Brainiac, an alien cyborg played by Lars Eidinger.
