The Japan vs. France Twitter War is an online flame war between Twitter / X users from France and Twitter users from Japan. The war was started in mid-October 2026, when protesters in France were seen using the flag of the Straw Hat Pirates from the anime series One Piece during Act 3 protests, which demand changes regarding education, budget cuts and cost of living issues.
Photos of the One Piece flag being used in the protest started going viral on X in on October 17th, 2026. Japanese X users argued that the symbol should not be used in this way, with some suggesting that the French protestors are terrorists or supporting terrorist causes. This sparked a lengthy back-and-forth between Japanese and French X users, including exchanges of statistics that promote each country.
