Mike Flanagan expressed his interest in making a new movie for the iconic shark-thriller franchise, Jaws. The filmmaker is known for his horror work, with his Carrie TV series currently streaming on Prime Video and a new Exorcist movie set to release next year.
At an official Ask Me Anything event on Prime Video’s Reddit account, fans asked Flanagan whether he planned to helm any other franchise movies. In response, he wrote, “Honestly, I wish to hell I could make a Jaws movie.” He added, “A Jurassic movie could be a blast too; I’d want to go really scary with it. A true dinosaur horror film would be a blast.”
Moreover, Flanagan discussed how his approach to filmmaking and sequels has evolved. Although the filmmaker spent much of his career believing he would avoid making franchise films, he has come to appreciate the opportunity to work within the fictional world he knows, respects, and loves.
Mike Flanagan believes the Jaws sequels have plenty of room for improvementAlthough Mike Flanagan said he would love to work on a Jaws sequel, he expressed his admiration for the 1975 original. In his comment, Flanagan also stated, “[Jaws is] another example where no one will EVER get close to the original, but there is a ton of room for improvement on the sequels.”
The director’s comment reflects the critical reception of the franchise’s sequels, which did not match the acclaimed original directed by Steven Spielberg. For instance, Jaws currently holds a 97% Tomatometer score and a 98% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.
However, its 1978 sequel has received 56% on the Tomatometer and 40% on the Popcornmeter. The third 1983 installment received even lower ratings: 10% and 17% on the Tomatometer and Popcornmeter, respectively. Lastly, the franchise’s fourth movie, Jaws: The Revenge, dipped even lower, scoring 2% on the Tomatometer and 15% on the Popcornmeter.
Flanagan’s sequel could raise those dipping scores; however, his comments express interest rather than confirm a new project is in the works. The filmmaker’s next horror franchise movie is The Exorcist: Martyrs, slated for release on March 12, 2027.
