Jeremiah is quite the force, but it does feel like viewers have responded well to Anna Pigeon because it offers something a bit different.

Poor Jeff. Ryan Northcutt, who plays Jeff, he’s up against it. I’ve got my thumb on his neck, feeling his pulse. “Either you’re taking my 625, or I’m going to take it for free. It’s up to you.” He seems kind about it, but you know the drums are pounding.

I think Morwyn’s done an incredible job for the audience — this incredible audience on USA Network and Crave up here in Canada.

Even though it’s a procedural — she solves a crime almost every week — there is this throughline of Tricia Helfer — love her — and me.

We’re all the way throughout. We pop in and out, and so where’s this going to end? What’s the climax going to be? I think it’s going to be super exciting for people.

Yeah, following on that, I always say Jeremiah’s a character where you’re almost as worried when he’s off-screen as you are when he’s on screen. He’s a threat that’s just kind of always lingering there.

Is it challenging to bring that type of energy, or is it just really fun?

No, it’s just really fun. Oh, that’s so great. Now think about that.

As an audience, you’re going, “Oh no, where is that asshole? Where is that monster in the woods?” And then when he comes, you’re almost relieved because there he is.

You want to keep your enemies close. I’m there a lot, coming up in the last five episodes, and God, he was just so much fun to play.

I’ve spoken with Morwyn, Cooper, and Ronnie about this as well, but it sounds like a great set to work on.

They’re the best. Paulina, Alexis… all great.

Let’s talk about Ronnie for a minute. I got some scenes coming up with him, and he’s like an old sheriff, man. The gun’s at his hip, and he’s an FBI agent who’s not taking any goff. He’s very smooth.

It was great to work with Ronnie because my character doesn’t work with a lot of people — Tracy and I, for sure. Ronnie and Jeff, for sure. But going on their set, it wasn’t my set. I’ve had sets that were my sets, and I’ll have more sets that are my sets. This wasn’t.

I was walking onto Tracy’s set, and it was an incredible family. You could tell all these rangers how much fun they were having, how seriously they took the scripts, and how well everyone got along. Here’s to a season two because it’s percolating now as a series. I really believe that.

It really is. Of course I’m excited because I used to love USA Network content here in the States. They had so many great shows, then they disappeared from the scripted game, but now they’ve returned, and it’s like “Yes, we’re back!”

Oh, good for you, Bluesy, you’re right. USA’s put the money in the center of the table, and now they’re coming up with some scripted series.

Anna Pigeon was their first of eight coming up, and they’re not fooling around, and they’re casting it really well, and they’re spending some money. And we had an incredible premiere in LA. They spent money on press.

And I get to talk to you today with Ananda Friedman, my publicist, who’s amazing, and I get to talk to people about this show.

I wasn’t talking early because Jeremiah wasn’t really a focal, but now he’s become focal, and you better talk to Kim Coates when that character’s focal because you’re not going to get any information that you would through me. [Laughs]

It’s garnered a great response, it seems, largely because it’s a different kind of procedural.

It’s a different show, isn’t it? It’s a female forest ranger in the woods, issues galore, alcoholic, husband’s dead. How did that happen? Flashbacks. She can’t sleep. She’s got stuff to sort out, but her heart is a heart of gold, and she loves nature.

This mountainous procedural has drama with some comedy.

I met Nevada Barr at the premiere in LA. She and her husband were so gracious and giving it up, and I just said, “I’m a fan, New York Times bestseller.”

She goes, “It’s like I’m in a dream, Kim. I’m watching these shows. I’m in a dream, like a dream.” She was so happy and so proud of this show. So far, it’s a hit, and I’m really happy for the whole team.

Your character is a show original character, not one from the books, right? Some people had the books and script to pull from, and others just the script, so how did that change your process with playing him?

I think you should always draw from a book or a poet or a poem if the show’s based on that. You should definitely read the books. I mean, Black Hawk Down, of course I read the book, and The Client, of course I read the book. You can draw so many things from your character if it’s in the book.

I perused the first one. It was so darn good. I didn’t need to read anymore because I needed to play Jeremiah Paulson, who’s not in the book, so I needed to figure out myself what my relationship is to the mountains, to the land, to the enriched minerals, to Tracy, to Anna Pigeon, to Jeffrey, his character, my battle…

I just did a couple of interviews where they say, “Jeremiah’s so quiet. There’s a lot of yelling going on.” Well, he doesn’t have to raise his voice. I mean, he’s Jeremiah Paulson. He’s got people everywhere. He doesn’t need to raise his voice, right? So that’s been fun to play.

Yes, exactly. What’s that Theodore Roosevelt quote? “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” Jeremiah is powerful, and that says it all.

[Laughs] You know, girl!

I also bring a little bit of a Montana accent to the guy. They weren’t worrying about accents with people. They just wanted people to talk in their regular voice and keep it Canadian-American, just as a base.

But I had fun because I know Montana. It’s right below Alberta, and I live in Saskatchewan; that’s where I was born. And I’ve skied in Montana.

And these cowboys, they’re not like the West; they’re not like Texas or the South, but they got a little lilt going on, just a little bit of a lilt. And so it was fun to bring that into my character too.

I love that little detail. I love that little effort; it’s not something you see as frequently anymore — intentional accent work.

Acting, Jasmine. It’s called acting. I love accents, baby. I’ve done so many, and I’ll do more and more. I think if you have a character with an accent, it’s all of a sudden not you anymore at all. It’s somebody else, and that’s very exciting for a guy like me who’s a very internal actor to play.

What has been the most challenging aspect of this role and what has been the most rewarding so far?

We filmed it so long ago. We filmed it over a year ago, and I’m 107 years old. I look really good for my age, but it’s hard for me to remember.

You do; you need to play a vampire next.

I’ve done a couple, but I wouldn’t mind doing a couple more.

I just love filming in Canada. I love being around all these actors on the set, and Paul Sarossy, our DP. How did he get the cameras in the woods like that? How’d he get the electrics in there? Where did they go to do some of these shots that I’m seeing now that I didn’t when I was in the show?

So for me, just to be surrounded by Kananaskas and Bragg Creek, you just breathe that air, and you know it’s safe, and you know it’s amazing. You drink the water from the creeks, and the animals, the wranglers, they’re top-notch; the horses — that was special.

And the icing on the cake was the writing and working with Tracy and working with Ronnie and working with Jeff and Paulina and Tricia Helfer, who I’ve worked with before, love her. It was great and easy.

We would just rehearse, and then we would say, “Let’s shoot it and see where it goes.” We would ad-lib, and Morwyn was happy with that, and it was a great time. So to now see it come to fruition and the rest of the world can see it a year later, pretty great. The reviews have been really good.

I know you obviously can’t spoil anything at all, really, but what can you tease? What are you most excited about the fans getting to see?

These final shows are going to shock the audience. They’re not going to see a couple of things coming. There’s been some beautiful comedy in this show, which has been so fun to watch in these dramatic situations that you’ve got to have a bit of comedy.

Boy oh boy, the comedy almost gets kicked to the curb coming up. It’s full-on Jeremiah Paulson, Anna Pigeon, and some other beautiful characters trying to figure out: what does he want? What is he going to get? Who is he really?

The husband thing. Will we find out what’s going on with how did he finally, why did he die? How did he die? Why? It’s all going to be a mishmash of these things coming together, and I’m telling you right now, I didn’t see it coming.

I was shocked. So there are a couple of things that people are just going to go, “Oh my.” Very exciting stuff, Blu.
