ST. CATHARINES CHEERLEADING COACH FACES SEX ASSAULT CHARGES

A 42-year-old cheerleading coach in St. Catharines faces charges in a sex assault investigation involving allegations that date back more than 15 years.

Niagara Regional Police say detectives with the Sexual Assault Unit received information early this year about historical sexual assaults that allegedly involved two cheerleaders he once coached.

“Two separate females reported being sexually assaulted, on several occasions, by the same suspect between 2009 and 2012,” police said in a statement released Wednesday. “The suspect was an adult at the time of the offences and was a cheerleading coach for both females.”

Following an investigation, detectives arrested Derek Ovenden on Tuesday.

The St. Catharines resident is charged with one count of sexual assault, one count of sexual interference and four counts of sexual exploitation.

He was scheduled to attend a bail hearing on Tuesday in St. Catharines.

“Ovenden was a volunteer cheerleading coach at high schools in St. Catharines within the District School Board of Niagara before opening his own cheerleading gym called Cheer Empire Eagles,” police explained.

Detectives are concerned about the possibility of other alleged sexual assault victims involving the accused.

BANDITS USED SUV TO BREAK INTO WELLAND JEWELRY STORE

The hunt is on for two bandits who used an SUV to smash their way into a jewelry store in Welland earlier this week.

Niagara Regional Police say officers responded to an attempted break-and-enter involving two masked males at a jewelry store near Thorold Rd. and Prince Charles Dr. shortly before 5 p.m. on Monday.

“Initial information was that a white Volkswagen Touareg SUV was used to hit the front of the business in an attempt to gain access,” police said in a statement released Wednesday. “The suspects were unable to gain access and fled the scene in a black Audi Q7 SUV at a high rate of speed prior to police arrival.”

Police said the suspect vehicle was last seen heading south on Lloyd Ave. from Thorold Rd. and “may have stopped momentarily” near the intersection of Lloyd Ave. and Maple Park Dr.

“Detectives with the 3 District Criminal Investigations Bureau have taken carriage of the investigation,” police said. “They believe that while the jewelry store was targeted in this incident, that the public should exercise caution if they observe the suspects or suspect vehicle due to the extreme danger in their behaviour and driving.”

Police are advising anyone who spots the suspects or the suspect vehicle to call 911 immediately.

Nobody was injured in the botched heist but police said, “The building sustained significant damages, and a structural engineer is being consulted to determine the integrity of the building.”

Anyone who was in the area at the time, or who has video that could help investigators, is urged to call police at 905-688-4111, option 3, ext. 1009106.
