Residents will face a competitive choice when they head to the polls in the 2026 local government elections as several political parties have announced their Johannesburg mayoral candidates.

Johannesburg is South Africa’s economic hub and home to Sandton, often described as Africa’s richest square mile. However, the metropolitan municipality continues to face challenges, including poor service delivery, deteriorating infrastructure, recurring water and electricity outages, and concerns about the city’s financial management.

With the local government elections scheduled for 4 November 2026, political parties are hoping to convince residents that their candidates can address these challenges and improve the running of the city.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has selected Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng, a medical doctor and former United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to health, as its Johannesburg mayoral candidate.
