With Kaizer Chiefs winless in four games, questions are being raised regarding Frenchman’s tactical approach and how he manages his troops.

Amakhosi have it all to play for in Friday’s second leg at the Moses Mabhida Stadium to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup last 16 group stages.

And there’s a bit more. The Soweto giants may be unbeaten in the Betway Premiership, but three wins and five draws have piled pressure on Da Cruz.

FERNANDO DA CRUZ’S KAIZER CHIEFS TACTICS UNDER SCRUTINY

Da Cruz has seemingly set strong emphasis on tactical discipline and structure. The approach has restricted the individual quality and flair associated with Amakhosi and South African players.

Organisation takes local football to a different level but local players need room for improvisation to create opportunities and entertainment. Individual expression seems to be holding back Kaizer Chiefs’ attacking players.

The 1-0 defeat to Arrows highlighted some of those concerns. Da Cruz has strongly stuck to three central defenders and two wingbacks that drop into a back five when defending.

There’s a call for the former AS FAR coach to balance his tactical guidelines without limiting his team’s ability to attack. Their are growing concerns about players’ negative body language. At times they look weighed down by tactical responsibilities, and often seem too afraid to make mistakes.

A NEED FOR ADAPTATION

Man-management could prove decisive in determining whether Da Cruz succeeds at Naturena. He needs to understand the players’ strengths and give them enough freedom to make decisions during matches.

The French coach must also adapt to South African football. His experience in French and Moroccan football structures may have influenced his methods, but he needs to find an approach that suits this current environment and culture.

While his limited English is a factor, Da Cruz must remain open to different ways of communicating, motivating his squad and getting his message across. Tactical knowledge alone will not guarantee success if players struggle to understand or execute his ideas.

His recent coaching history is another factor worth considering. Da Cruz had not coached a team since 2023, having subsequently worked as a technical director and later as an instructor within the Moroccan Football Federation. Managing a team during competitive matches presents different challenges.

At Kaizer Chiefs, tactical discipline must deliver results without sacrificing creativity, individual quality and the confidence of the players.
