Keanu Reeves‘ next role is in a Die Hard-esque action movie. The John Wick star will once again step into action as he takes the lead in Maelstrom, a Netflix film the streaming giant has long forgotten.

According to Page Six Hollywood, the project was first pitched as a script more than three decades ago, in 1993. That was the time when studios were pushing to find action films in the vein of the genre-defining Die Hard (1988).

At the time, screenwriter Greg Fitzpatrick sold the script as a spec script to Warner Bros. 33 years later, Netflix is resurrecting it after Mark Bianculli recently freshened it up. Former WB film boss Jeff Robinov is producing the film.

Keanu Reeves steps into a role once eyed by Alan Ritchson

The latest Die Hard-inspired revived action movie, Maelstrom, previously had Alan Ritchson linked to it. Reports said the Reacher star was in talks for the lead role. However, the outlet now reports that Ritchson has dropped out, and fellow action star Reeves is taking over the role.

Per Page Six Hollywood, Reeves is set to play a Federal Marshal tasked with guarding the fiancée of an arms dealer. Jaume Collet-Serra is directing the movie.

As reported by the outlet, “Maelstrom follows a Federal Marshall tasked with guarding the fiancée of an arms dealer who’s seeking witness protection as she preps to testify against him. The story takes place over one night as a hurricane rolls in, knocking out communication — and the duo fights to survive the arms dealer’s henchmen and the elements.”

As of this writing, production details and a release-date window for Maelstrom have yet to be officially confirmed.
