Kenneth Branagh and X-Men star Boyd Holbrook are back on the big screen. The film is the 2006-based-article-adapted drama Atonement. Written and directed by Reed Van Dyk, the war drama was released today.

Atonement is a harrowing true war story, based on the true story of a former US Marine seeking to reconcile with survivors of a family that his unit attacked in Iraq. The movie stars Holbrook (who starred as Donald Pierce in the X-Men movie Logan) as Lou D’Alessandro, Branagh as Michael Reid, Hiam Abbass as Mariam Khachaturian, Gheed as Nora, Yara Bakri as Anna, and Kalama Epstein as Pat.

The film had its world premiere on May 15 at the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival 2026. At the event, it was nominated for the Caméra d’Or. It will also screen at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival on September 15.

Kenneth Branagh’s war drama explores the painful aftermath of a 2003 Iraq attack

Atonement is inspired by a true story first documented in a 2012 New Yorker article by journalist Dexter Filkins. The film’s narrative centers on a devastating 2003 Baghdad shooting. During the initial chaos of the Iraq War, a U.S. Marine unit mistakenly opened fire on two civilian vehicles. The impact killed three male members of an Iraqi family.

The film fast-forwards to roughly a decade later to explore the lingering psychological scars, combat guilt, and trauma affecting everyone involved in the counter. Following this, a meeting is eventually arranged in California between the surviving family matriarch and the former Marine who pulled the trigger. This sets the stage for a tense but deeply human exploration of forgiveness.

Distributed by Kino Lorber, fans can now catch Atonement in theatres.
