Kevin Pietersen was a true pioneer - the first to play some of the innovative, unorthodox and simply breathtaking shots that are now commonplace in the modern game.
He is a hero to many of the younger players now in the England setup. He is perfectly qualified, at 46, to fulfil the mentor role given to him by white-ball coach Brendon McCullum in the hope he can pass on some of his vast experience.
And yet it 𝘪𝘴 a gamble to bring him back into the England setup. He has too much history, too much baggage, and there have been too many bitter departures from different environments for this to be considered anything other than that.
Is his appointment a risk worth taking for McCullum?
