The long-awaited romantic comedy starring Lili Reinhart is now streaming on Prime Video as of Wednesday, September 23, 2026. Based on Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling romance novel, the movie follows a biology PhD student who enters a fake relationship with a strict professor, only for their plan to become something more.
Directed by Claire Scanlon, The Love Hypothesis brings Hazelwood’s popular romance to the screen while keeping its focus on academic life, research, and the relationship between its two leads. Reinhart also serves as an executive producer and stars opposite British actor Tom Bateman.
The movie carries a unique connection to Star Wars. Hazelwood’s original story originated as online fan fiction inspired by the relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren. Olive wants to convince Anh that she has moved on, so she impulsively kisses the first man she sees in an empty hallway. The man turns out to be Dr. Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman), a young professor known for his tough demeanor.
Rather than reporting the incident, Adam agrees to pretend they are dating. The fake relationship helps Olive reassure her friend, while Adam uses the arrangement to ease concerns from university administrators regarding his research plans and department funding.
The two create rules for their arrangement, but spending more time together slowly changes their relationship. What begins as a simple agreement becomes harder to separate from their genuine feelings.
The supporting cast features Jaboukie Young-White as Olive’s roommate Malcolm, alongside Arty Froushan as Dr. Tom Benton, Jeananne Goossen, and Aladeen Tawfeek.
