For all the elbows-up talk on Donald Trump, schools still teach kids that Canada is the problem. If it isn’t white supremacy, it’s toxic masculinity or some other problem that only radical teachers can solve.

Based on what I’ve seen in just the first two weeks of the school year, the Doug Ford government hasn’t done nearly enough to rein in Ontario’s education system.

Over the last several years, the Ontario government has placed eight different school boards under supervision . Those include the Thames Valley District School Board, Toronto District School Board, Toronto Catholic District School Board, Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, Near North District School Board, Peel District School Board and York Catholic District School Board.

As I’ve written several times over the years, the behaviour of school boards will one day be the main reason they are written out of existence. When they aren’t wasting taxpayer dollars on ridiculous trips, they are allowing radicals to take over the education of our children.

White supremacy everywhere

“I will accept that the institution of education is an instrumental tool for maintaining and furthering the ideology of white supremacy,” said a slide presented at an all-staff meeting at an elementary school in York Region last week.

“It is not the responsibility of people with intersecting marginalized identities to prove this.”

None of this should be shocking. Radicals have been pushing crazy ideas inside Ontario’s education system for years. While this latest outrage is a slide from a presentation at a single school, though likely reflecting a view held by many, similar thinking has been integrated into the official curriculum in the past.

“Mathematics has been used to normalize racism and marginalization of non-Eurocentric mathematical knowledges and a decolonial, anti-racist approach to mathematics education makes visible its historical roots and social constructions,” Ontario’s 2021 official curriculum stated .

Upon seeing the document, the Ford government ordered the language removed.

“In math, let’s stick with math,” Ford said at the time.

The whack-a-mole problem

The problem is — and this is something I’ve spoken with Education Minister Paul Calandra and former minister Stephen Lecce about — dealing with these issues is like a game of whack-a-mole. While most teachers and administrators are just nice, normal people who want to go to work and do their jobs, there is a group of activists who want to push politics into the classroom.

In the past, we’ve had leading math educators at the TDSB link math and objectivity to white supremacy and racism . Phrases such as “standardized testing,” “just stick to math” and “of course math is neutral because 2+2=4” were all described as “covert white supremacy” in a webinar given by Jason To as head of the Ontario Mathematics Co-ordinators Association in 2023.

To is currently the co-ordinator of mathematics and numeracy at TDSB, where he oversees “strategic direction in mathematics improvement from kindergarten to Grade 12.”

Boys are the new target

Last week, a parent of a teen student in the Peel District School Board posted a photo of a slide presentation their son had to sit through. It described being stoic, self-sufficient and showing physical and mental toughness as traits of “toxic masculinity.”

How do we expect boys to grow into men when we tell them that key characteristics of masculinity are toxic?

Ontario’s schools should be places of education, not indoctrination. Despite the best efforts of Calandra and Lecce before him, Ontario clearly has a long way to go.
