Hello!
I'd love some input on which direction you'd recommend. Especially interested in hearing from people who went with a less-than-ideal sink/stovetop setup and ended up regretting it. 😄
We're building a new, fairly large kitchen, and we're having trouble deciding where to put the sink. The overall layout will probably stay as it is (L-shaped kitchen + island) because of how the rest of the open-plan living/dining area is laid out.
We're considering two options:
1) Sink roughly opposite the stovetop
Pros:
- Better/shorter working triangle
- More convenient workflow
Cons:
- We lose some storage space, especially for appliances
- The countertop by the window becomes somewhat redundant
- The kitchen feels a bit crowded on one side and empty on the other
2) Sink by the window
Pros:
- Spreads things out a bit more
- Gives us space for another tall cabinet / somewhere to hide appliances
- Overall, we think the kitchen looks nicer this way
Cons:
- The fridge → sink → stovetop workflow becomes less direct
- Food prep would involve somewhat longer paths
- We're a bit worried about the awkward angle between the sink and stovetop
So the main question is: is it worth sacrificing the more optimal workflow for a somewhat nicer-looking and more balanced kitchen?
We're currently leaning towards option 2, but I'm worried that we'll end up constantly walking back and forth between the sink and stovetop and regret not going with the more practical layout.
For those who've lived with a similar setup: how important has the sink–stovetop relationship actually been in everyday use? Would you prioritize the workflow, or would you be comfortable choosing the layout that looks and functions better overall?
I'm attaching the floor-plans (not exact) and two low quality screen captures of the two layout (colors are somewhat TBD).
Thanks for any input!
