The 12 Dates of Christmas stars Lucy Hale and Ian Harding spoke with ComingSoon’s Tyler Treese about their new movie. The duo discussed the film’s bad dates and reuniting after Pretty Little Liars. The 12 Dates of Christmas is streaming November 6 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.

“Christina Walker, a successful shop owner who has devoted her energy to her career at the expense of her dating life, goes on 12 dates in the 12 weeks leading up to Christmas hoping to find Mr. Right.”

Tyler Treese: Lucy, you’re pretty much going through hell in the first hour of this movie. The date with the influencer streaming is wild. How much fun was it getting to go through these nightmare dating scenarios and thankfully having them play out in a film rather than real life?

Lucy Hale: Oh, yeah. Well, I’ve had my fair share of that in real life as well. But I just loved this concept so much. I couldn’t believe that it, maybe it’s been done before, but definitely not in this way. I mean, she’s got the influencer, she’s got the fugitive, she’s got the guy who brings his mom.

And then she lands on this stud, this normal guy.

Ian Harding: Yeah, fine.

Hale: It was very, very fun to get to play around with all of these different actors. And we made this movie quickly, too. So sometimes I was shooting three of those dates in one day. So just pivoting and trying to make them all a little bit different. But I mean, great casting.

Harding: Yeah, really fun.

Hale: Yeah, great casting. It was a lot of fun.

Harding: And I obviously hadn’t worked with any of the actors in the date scenes because they come in for one day. And so to see all these performances back to back, it was both wonderful, like, “Wow, what a great performance,” and also, “Man, this is so painful,” because the dates are so brutal. So it was a fun watch.

Hale: You could say she gets the ick quite a few times.

Harding: Oh, man. Yeah, no, I was in my chair.

Hale: I saw you. You were like, slightly…

Harding: Yeah, I was on the floor by the end.

Ian, you and Lucy have years of chemistry together. So I was curious how it was stripping that away a bit for the early scenes where you can tell there’s a spark, but it’s not a full-on connection.

Harding: Yeah, it was a lot of fun. I think there was, again, with the script, you just follow the script. And it was like, “All right, so we don’t have the thing yet.” And over the course of the movie, maybe something grows. But I did have to step back a little bit and not jump immediately into, I guess, our old ways of acting.

Hale: Complete adoration.

Harding: Yeah, complete adoration and respect. I had to tone it down. But it was fun just jumping back into this and playing with a longtime friend, which is really what it felt like. It was surreal at one moment.

Whenever you do a new movie or a new job, there’s always that first day, first scene, “What’s it going to be like?” And that, I think, was present for about 11 seconds. And then we just got back into it. So it was a delight.

Lucy, I don’t want to get into the weeds of Pretty Little Liars, but are you glad that you two now have a really wholesome, controversy-free relationship where people can enjoy it without any asterisks?

Lucy Hale: You know, I think Ian and I are glad to be playing the same age in this movie. And we’re very, very grateful, obviously, for that show. It came with its conversations, but I’m speaking for myself, that show, that relationship was such a big blessing in my life, and so a dream come true to reunite.

Ian Harding: Seconded.

Hale: Being the same age.

Harding: Being adults.

Hale: Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Thanks to Lucy Hale and Ian Harding for taking the time to talk about The 12 Dates of Christmas.
