Hasbro is bringing one of its most popular fantasy properties to the big screen. The upcoming live-action Magic: The Gathering movie will adapt the iconic trading card game. The adaptation aims to introduce audiences to the game’s expansive magical world. A new casting development has also brought a familiar franchise star into the picture.

According to Deadline, Maya Hawke will reportedly join the upcoming live-action film. The Stranger Things star could play a key character in the adaptation, although the studios have not revealed details about her potential role. Producers reportedly prioritized approaching the actress before opening auditions for several other characters. Meanwhile, Hawke will also appear as Wiress in the upcoming The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

The upcoming film will launch a bigger Magic: The Gathering universe

The live-action film is part of Hasbro’s broader plans to develop Magic: The Gathering into a screen franchise. The company partnered with Legendary Entertainment in February 2025 to develop a film and TV universe based on the property.

First released in 1993, mathematician Richard Garfield created Magic: The Gathering. The game revolves around Planeswalkers, powerful magic users who travel between different worlds. Its fantasy setting includes mythical creatures, magical abilities, and conflicts between different realms. This gives the filmmakers a broad foundation for developing stories across multiple projects.

Matt Johnson, who directed BlackBerry, will direct the film. He will also serve as a writer alongside Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. However, the filmmakers have not shared specific details about the story or identified the characters who will lead the adaptation.

The project is still in development, and the studios have yet to announce its release date or production timeline. Hawke’s reported casting is also awaiting official confirmation from the filmmakers.

Meanwhile, Netflix is developing a separate animated series based on Magic: The Gathering. The two projects represent different approaches to bringing the trading card game’s extensive fantasy setting to television and film.
