Magneto’s Biggest Change Is Finally Being Put to the Test by Marvel

Marvel just pushed Magneto’s biggest change to its limit, and one Fantastic Four hero wants no part of it. The X-Men’s latest crossover forces two of Marvel’s greatest minds to decide whether the Master of Magnetism deserves a second chance.

Reed Richards’ distrust shows how far Magneto has come from his X-Men villain origins

Marvel Comics has depowered Magneto in its ongoing X-Men and Fantastic Four crossover, DNX. Using his magnetic abilities now puts Max Eisenhardt’s body in serious physical danger. As a result, the X-Men must seek outside help to restore the Master of Magnetism.

The damage began in Jed MacKay’s X-Men #36. There, the Chairman, Krakoa’s Hank McCoy, asked Magneto to join his team. Magneto refused, so the Chairman beat him close to death. He then forcibly extracted Magneto’s blood, cerebrospinal fluid and bone marrow. The X-Men rescued and stabilized Magneto before he could die.

In DNX, the X-Men’s Hank McCoy recognizes he cannot fix Magneto alone. Therefore, he turns to Reed Richards for help. Beast wants to heal Magneto’s body and restore his powers to their former strength. Reed agrees to help with healing, but argues the world is safer without an empowered Magneto.

New X-Man Ben Liu then observes that Reed also fears for himself. If Magneto commits heinous acts, people could blame Reed for fixing a terrorist. Reed agrees and compares the procedure to building a weapon. He adds that anyone hurt as a result would be his fault. Notably, Magneto has not acted as a villain for several years. He even fought alongside Iron Man against Feilong’s Sentinels during Fall of X.

Eventually, Sue Storm enters the lab and tells Reed to stop pretending he does not want to help. She also warns Beast directly. If Magneto embarrasses her and her husband, she will come after both Beast and Magneto. Her intervention allows the process to begin. Meanwhile, Cyclops and his team battle the Chairman, who plans to unleash an X-Virus. That virus would transform humans into mutants.
