Sylvester Stallone‘s Tulsa King returns for its fourth season this week, but one of the series’ main characters nearly didn’t return. Frank Grillo, who plays Bill Bevilaqua, thought his character’s story had run its course after Season 3, but a conversation with Stallone changed his mind.

In an interview with Screen Rant, Grillo explained that Stallone called him to discuss behind-the-scenes changes to the series. The actor said the call felt personal, likening Stallone to a mentor or an older brother. “There’s a thing about him that I love [so] much. As soon as he says, ‘Do you want to come back,’ it’s like your mentor or older brother saying, ‘Do you want to come hang out with me?'” Grillo said.

Grillo also told Stallone he was open to returning on one condition. “If this is written well, and Bill is an integral part of it again, I’m down,” the 61-year-old said.

Frank Grillo discusses working with Terence Winter on Tulsa King

Winter originally served as showrunner for the first season but stepped away from the role for Season 2. After returning as a writer and executive producer for Season 2, he was absent from Season 3 and is returning as head writer and executive producer for Season 4.

Grillo praised Winter’s understanding of the criminal underworld, honed through his work on The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire. “Terence Winter is a singular writer. He understands this world better than anybody,” Grillo said. He also expressed personal admiration for Winter, describing himself as a loyal person.

The actor recalled Stallone’s call as the moment that brought him back into the fold. “When Sly said the band’s getting back together, I said, ‘I’m going to get my guitar. I’ll be right over,'” he added.

Season 4 follows Dwight Manfredi (Stallone) as he fights to legitimize his empire, protect his crew against new enemies, and endure personal loss.

Tusla King Season 4 premieres on Paramount+ on October 16.
