Another step forward on the climb to level 80 arrived for me in Pokemon Go.  I made it to level 76 at the start of September, about two weeks behind my wife.  Now as November has opened up I have arrived at level 77.

My wife… well, she still has a platinum medal left to get.  She’ll catch up.

The tasks to get to level 77 were:

  • Earn 41 Platinum medals
  • Power up 7 Pokemon to their max CP
  • Win 100 Max Battles
  • Make 10 trades with Pokemon caught at least 300km apart

The trades were easy.  We were in LA for a few days and just cross traded some Pokemon from home with some we had caught down there and were done.

The max CP was a bit of a chore, but I had been working on prepping for that since the last time that was a task, so had 4 ready to go and three more that needed a bit of a push.  The most difficult part was just finding the ones I had prepped a few months back.

In the end, the 100 Max Battles target was the last task I managed.  I was held back by the somewhat random nature of Max Battles… one day they are all five star battles so you need a big group… and the paywall the game puts on them… so another day there are one star battles everywhere, but you can only redeem so much Max Battle mojo in a single day without paying, effectively capping you at maybe five battles.

On the platinum medal front, I actually got four in during the level, so I am one up for level 78.  The four I got were:

  • Mega Evolution Guru – 46 different species mega evolved
  • Rail Staff – 2,500 steel type caught
  • Cameraman – 400 snapshot encounters
  • Berry Master – 15,000 berries fed at gyms

So once I got that last Max Battle in I was level 77.

Now begins the run to level 78.

There is, of course, an xp element to that, but I am way ahead of the curve there.

I am nearly to the amount of xp I will need to hit level 80, sitting at 199 million of the 203 million xp required.

That leaves the tasks, and the tasks are always what takes all the time.

Spelling those out for later re-use, they are:

  • Earn 44 Platinum medals
  • Earn 400 hears with your buddy
  • Explore 400 km
  • Complete 500 Field Research tasks

Everything on that list besides the platinum medals will pretty much just “happen” if I play the game as usual.  I’ll probably do MORE of each of those items, but those are things I do anyway.

Then there are the platinum medals.  I need two more of those, with one on the list I am very close to completing.

  • Skier – 2,588 of 2,500 ice type caught

That will get knocked out as soon as there is a holiday event this year.  That leaves me with one more to get.  I went through the possible options for platinum medals in a big post earlier in the year.  Here are the top candidates I have on my list right now:

  1. Wayfarer – 647 out of 1,500 Wayfarer agreements
  2. Backpacker – 41,870 of 50,000 Pokestops visited
  3. Great League Veteran – 366 of 1,000 victories needed
  4. Expert Navigator – 268 of 600 routes completed
  5. Jumbo Pokemon Collector – 329 of 500 XXL Pokemon caught
  6. Tiny Pokemon Collector – 236 of 500 XXS Pokemon caught
  7. Best Buddy – 25 of 200 best buddies needed
  8. Dragon Tamer – 1,513 of 2,500 dragon type caught

I need one of those for level 78, and then another six to get all the way to level 80.

I’d like it is the company would give us a way to finish at least one of the incomplete Pokedexes.  There are two that are so close, but the final entries just are not available yet.

My wife, on the other hand, still needs one more platinum medal to get to 77.  We’re going to have to figure something out where we can team up.  We made some progress on the XXL front during Halloween, as XXL Pumpkaboos were pretty common while the holiday event was running.  That dried up once it was over though, so we’ll need a new path.

So that is where we sit.
