A young male is dead following a shooting in Etobicoke on Saturday.

Toronto Police said the victim, who has yet to be identified, is either in his late teens or early 20s.

Police said on social media earlier in the day emergency services responded to a shooting shortly before 4:30 p.m. in the Rathburn Rd. and The East Mall area.

“When officers arrived on scene, they located a male suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately began providing lifesaving measures,” Insp. Jeff Allington told reporters.

“That male was transported to hospital where, sadly, he passed away and has now been pronounced deceased.”

This is the city’s 33rd homicide of the year.

Two male suspects

Allington said the only description police have of the suspects are two males wearing dark clothing.

The investigation has been taken over by the homicide and missing persons unit, he added.

“We’re asking anybody that was in the area if they could provide any assistance to us whatsoever by checking any video cameras that they may have at home or reporting any suspicious activity to police,” Allington said.

The East Mall was closed northbound at Rathburn Rd. as officers continued their investigation into the night.

“We’re in the very early stages of this investigation, and you can expect to see officers out canvassing in the neighbourhood,” he said.

‘Very traumatic for the community’

“We understand that an event like this can be very traumatic for the community and the members that reside and work in the area, and we want to assure you that we are also concerned about this.”

Allington said extra officers will be out in the neighbourhood for the rest of the evening and likely during the day Sunday as the investigation continues.
