James Gunn just shut down what DC fans have been hoping to hear about Man of Tomorrow‘s biggest heroes. The director clarified how much screen time returning DCU characters can actually expect in the Superman sequel.
James Gunn says Man of Tomorrow has no ‘secret characters’James Gunn recently addressed fan speculation about hidden characters in his upcoming DC Universe film Man of Tomorrow on Threads. The director responded to a user asking about “secret characters” by stating the film centers on Lex Luthor and Clark Kent. He added that fans should not expect “substantial amounts of other characters” beyond the core cast.
Gunn further clarified his comments in a follow-up post. He explained that “substantial amounts” referred to both the number of new characters and their screen time. He noted that things online “have been blown way out of proportion” and that “most stuff is just dead wrong.”
Man of Tomorrow is confirmed to bring back Superman’s Justice Gang heroes. It also features returning DCU actors Aaron Pierre, Milly Alcock, and Xolo Maridueña as John Stewart, Supergirl, and Blue Beetle respectively. Along with them Adria Arjona will also appear, who is widely speculated to play Wonder Woman.
Wonder Woman or not, James Gunn’s remaks make it seem that Green Lantern(s), Blue Beetle, and all confirmed aforementioned heroes may not get significantly huge roles as the story is largely about Lex and Clark.
The comments also follow questions about actors in undisclosed roles. Fans specifically asked about Sinqua Walls and Matthew Lillard, whose characters remain unconfirmed. Gunn did not reveal any details about their roles in the exchange.
In a separate reply, Gunn discussed his take on Maxwell Lord for the DCU. He emphasized that the DCU “is not a xerox of DC Comics” but rather “an alternate universe.” He described himself as “a huge fan of the deeply flawed but hardly malevolent Max” from the original Justice League International comics by DeMatteis, Giffen, and Maguire.
Man of Tomorrow stars David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult reprising their roles as Superman and Lex Luthor. Lars Eidinger joins the cast as the film’s main antagonist, Brainiac. Filming wrapped on August 26 after approximately 93 days of production.
Warner Bros. Pictures plans to release the film on July 9, 2027.
