Marvel uses nostalgia and saves its biggest surprises for its Avengers movies. It’s a short-term strategy that could doom the MCU‘s future.
The next two MCU movies will be Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Both entries will feature dozens of MCU characters, from Thor and Sam Wilson to Yelena Belova and Sue Storm.
An Avengers movie as big as Doomsday and Secret Wars will certainly feature surprises. The return of unexpected characters is what Marvel has become known for. When it works, it creates viral moments that go down in MCU history.
Look at Spider-Man: No Way Home as an example. The rumors of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s secret involvement created so much discussion in the lead-up to the movie that when they finally showed up, it caused hysteria.
In recent years, Marvel has been in its comeback era, bringing characters back from the past and inserting them into new stories. Charlie Cox’s Daredevil for Daredevil: Born Again and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine for Deadpool & Wolverine have been met with rave reviews. Both characters could easily show up in Doomsday or Secret Wars.
The latest tease came from Jeremy Renner, who shared a picture of Hawkeye’s costume on his social media account. Could this mean Renner returns in Doomsday or Secret Wars? It wouldn’t surprise me if he did.
All of this nostalgia makes sense for these next two Avengers movies. If it becomes a long-term plan for Marvel, then the MCU is in trouble.
Nostalgia can be used to make must-see events, but it can’t build the MCU’s futureRelying on noteworthy MCU characters and actors is Marvel’s strategy for the Avengers movies. It’s hard to argue against the success rate, with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame as two of the eight highest-grossing movies of all time. Plus, Avengers: Doomsday is tracking toward another billion-dollar hit.
However, what happens after Secret Wars? It’s supposed to be a reset and create one universal timeline. The future of the MCU must be new characters. Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans still can’t be appearing in movies after Secret Wars. Marvel will lose its luster if it doesn’t create new stars.
Marvel is certainly trying to find new pillars of the MCU. The rebooted X-Men, Ghost Rider, and Black Panther 3 are three movies in 2027 that could usher in the new era of the MCU. These movies don’t need Thor or Sam Wilson showing up. Make a great movie, and you won’t need nostalgic characters to drive audiences to theaters.
Marvel is clearly banking on nostalgia for the Avengers’ movies. After that, say goodbye to the past and usher in the future.
