Netflix has officially renewed its hit psychological thriller TV show for a second season. The renewal brings series lead Claire Danes back as troubled author Agatha “Aggie” Wiggs.
Matthew Rhys’ The Beast in Me comes after the first season became a major success for the streaming service. According to Deadline, it also earned strong awards recognition for its cast and creators.
Howard Gordon, who was executive producer, writer, and co-showrunner on the first season, will return to oversee the new chapter alongside Daniel Pearle. Gordon has also signed a multi-year deal with Netflix through his Teakwood Lane Productions banner, under which he will develop additional projects for the streamer.
Created by Gabe Rotter and produced by 20th Television, The Beast in Me debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s Global Top 10. The series reached the Top 10 in 88 countries and collected 43 million views during its first seven weeks.
Meanwhile, Danes will return as Aggie, with the actress previously receiving an Emmy nomination for her performance. The Season 2 executive producing team also includes Antonio Campos, Caroline Baron, Amy Lippman, Conan O’Brien, David Kissinger, Jeff Ross, and Jodie Foster.
What happened in The Beast in Me Season 1?The first season followed Aggie, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author who withdrew from public life after her young son, Cooper, died in a car accident. Her isolated life changed when wealthy real estate developer Nile Jarvis (Rhys) purchased the property next to hers.
Nile was suspected of being involved in the disappearance of his first wife, and Aggie became fascinated by the mystery.
Nile later murdered an FBI agent and framed Aggie for the kidnapping of Teddy Fenig, the driver connected to Cooper’s death. His apparent control over the situation ended when his second wife, Nina (Brittany Snow), secretly recorded his confessions.
The recordings led to Nile’s arrest. He was later killed by fellow inmates, while Aggie published her manuscript and began confronting the grief that had shaped her life.
With Danes returning, Season 2 will continue Aggie’s story while introducing a new mystery for the character to investigate.
