Mckenna Grace revealed how one scene in The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping left her terrified. The scene also involved Glenn Close, and both actresses have discussed the experience in several interviews.
During an interview with IMDb, the cast discussed the slap scene between Close and Grace, which emerged as a particular favorite. Grace explained why the scene made her nervous, saying, “I was like, ‘If I don’t get this slap right, nobody is going to be convinced that I am Maysilee Donner,’ and so I put so much pressure on it.”
Beyond her character choices, Grace was also unsure how far Close wanted to take method acting for the scene. This left Grace unsure of what to expect during the scene and raised several questions in her mind. She said, “I started spiralling: What if I accidentally hit Glenn? What if she wants me to hit her? What if Glenn wants to go method and slap me? I cannot morally slap Glenn Close! What if I accidentally do? But what if I don’t pretend to hit her close enough and then it is not convincing?”

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is the latest movie in Lionsgate’s Hunger Games franchise. The movie is based on Suzanne Collins’ novel Sunrise on the Reaping, which follows Haymitch Abernathy as a tribute in the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. Grace plays Maysilee Donner, a District 12 tribute who openly opposes the Capitol.
Glenn Close plays Drusilla Sickle, the Capitol chaperone assigned to the District 12 tributes. With every Quarter Quell comes a new twist to the game, and the 50th Hunger Games is set to have double the number of tributes compared to the regular games. The movie is set 24 years before the events of The Hunger Games.
The movie hits theaters on November 20, 2026.
