Melissa McCarthy thinks one of her action comedies could have become a long-running franchise. The actor recently reflected on her comedy career and discussed why she believes there was plenty of room for more installments. She also imagined how the series could have continued with fresh stories.
In an interview, per Variety, McCarthy talked about Spy and shared her vision for its potential sequels. “We should be on the ninth ‘Spy’!”, she said. McCarthy added that everyone involved was ready to return immediately. She also suggested that each film could feature “a new villain, a new location.”
What was the original Spy movie with Melissa McCarthy about?Paul Feig wrote and directed Spy, which arrived in theaters in 2015. McCarthy stars as Susan Cooper, a CIA analyst who works behind the scenes to assist field agent Bradley Fine, played by Jude Law. The film also features Jason Statham, Rose Byrne, Miranda Hart, and Allison Janney.
Susan has extensive training but has spent most of her career working at a desk. After everyone believes Fine is dead, Susan volunteers to enter the field herself. She must track down Rayna Boyanov, a dangerous Bulgarian arms dealer played by Byrne.
The assignment pushes Susan into unfamiliar situations as she attempts to stop Boyanov and prevent sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands. The film combines international spy action with McCarthy’s comedy while also allowing Susan to develop into a capable field agent.
Spy received strong reviews from critics and currently holds a 94% Tomatometer score from 263 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
The film also made over $235 million worldwide against the budget of $65 million. It earned nominations at the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards, and MTV Movie Awards, while McCarthy won Favorite Comedic Movie Actress at the People’s Choice Awards.
Director Feig has also addressed a potential follow-up over the years. Speaking to Slashfilm, Feig confirmed he had previously mapped out a story idea for Spy 2, though he acknowledged that studio interest and timing would have to align for a sequel to happen.
More than a decade after the original film’s release, a sequel has yet to move into production, though McCarthy’s comments show she remains eager to step back into Susan Cooper’s shoes.
