Melissa McCarthy admitted she was once part of the problem surrounding JonBenét Ramsey’s case. The actress revealed what shocked her the most while preparing to play Patsy Ramsey in Netflix’s upcoming series.

McCarthy told Entertainment Tonight that preparing for the role forced a deep reckoning with public behavior. “I think what shocked me the most was just a realisation that we, at a certain point, took other people’s trauma as a sporting event,” she said. She added that having her own daughters shifted her perspective on the pageant imagery entirely.

The actress also told Variety she vividly recalls judging the family from tabloid coverage in 1996. “I have a very vivid memory of standing in a grocery store and looking at a tabloid and thinking, ‘How could you dress a little girl like that?'” she said. McCarthy admitted she willingly participated in the public frenzy surrounding the case.
She described the Netflix series as a character study rather than a mystery. “This is not a whodunit — this is a character study of everyone who was caught in the undertow,” McCarthy told Variety. She also shared her personal belief about the case. “My heart says no one in the family could have done that,” she said.
McCarthy plays Patsy Ramsey, who died of ovarian cancer in 2006. She told Variety she wrote multiple unsent letters to John and Burke Ramsey during filming. “I wrote, during the thing, to him and Burke — many letters — to be like, ‘I’m doing my best by her,'” she said. Co-star Clive Owen praised McCarthy’s commitment, saying the emotionally difficult shoot required a psychologist on set at all times. The series also stars Owen as John Ramsey and comes from showrunner Richard LaGravenese.
