Metro 2033 Redux and Metro Last Light Redux are getting a free next-gen update for existing owners, with the PC version arriving on October 22 and the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions following on October 29. The announcement also marks the Metro series passing 50 million copies sold worldwide.

Eurogamer reports that the upgrade is a technical refresh rather than a full remake or remaster. It preserves the original Redux games’ experience and aesthetic while adding visual, audio and platform-specific improvements.

A technical refresh ahead of Metro 2039

The update revisits the two earlier games in the series, which began with Metro 2033. The franchise is now 16 years on from that original release, and the refreshed Redux games arrive ahead of Metro 2039, which is slated for February 4.

That timing gives returning players a chance to revisit the earlier stories before the next entry, without asking them to buy the games again if they already own them. The series’ grim, post-apocalyptic setting also sits comfortably alongside other atmospheric survival shooters, including S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.

What the free update adds

Across all platforms, the update brings 4K textures, improved animations, higher-quality audio and richer environmental detail. It also includes community-requested bug fixes and quality-of-life changes, though full patch notes are being held until launch.

On PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X/S, the update adds native support and console-specific features. Players can choose native 4K at 60fps or upscaled 4K at 120fps on compatible displays; PS5 Pro gets PSSR, Xbox Series X gets TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing, and Xbox platforms receive spatial audio.

The console feature list also includes upgraded lighting, shadows and particle effects, hardware tessellation and displacement, and power-saving modes. DualSense Adaptive Triggers and Xbox Impulse Triggers are supported, while Xbox players additionally get Play Anywhere and handheld support.

PC players get DLSS and spatial audio, alongside the update’s visual improvements and quality-of-life fixes. The feature set is substantial, but the studio’s stated aim is to preserve the Redux games’ original look rather than rebuild them from the ground up.
