Microsoft Word and Windows are so tightly linked in my head that I’d always assumed one basically grew out of the other. The actual timeline is a lot weirder. Word was already a real product before Microsoft even announced Windows, and DOS wasn't even where its development began. The earliest version was built for Xenix, Microsoft’s own take on Unix.
