This 1984 Ford Mustang SVO was purchased new by the current owner in February 1984 from Manhattan Beach Ford in California, and it reportedly totaled 170k miles before a multi-year rebuild began in 2001 and was completed in 2006. The car subsequently won multiple awards and was featured in the September 2009 issue of Mustang Monthly. Work involved welding body seams and adding subframe connectors as well as installing Koni Fox coilovers, an aftermarket K-member, lighter Baer Eradispeed+ front brake rotors, and white 17″ 5Zigen forged wheels. The turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-four was built with a 1986 SVO block, forged pistons, a roller camshaft, and an Esslinger D-Port aluminum cylinder head, and it is boosted with a Garrett Stage 3 T3/T4 turbocharger. Power is routed via a BorgWarner T5 five-speed manual transmission and a Torsen limited-slip differential. The body was refinished in Rosso Corsa over a modified interior featuring dark gray cloth Recaro front seats, a roll cage, air conditioning, and an aftermarket stereo system. This Fox-body Mustang SVO is now offered by the selling dealer, a BaT Local Partner, on consignment with spare parts, service records, build documentation, and a Colorado title in the owner’s name.

Ford’s Special Vehicle Operations gave the Mustang SVO a biplane rear spoiler and revised front-end styling as well as rocker moldings and an offset hood scoop to feed the top-mount intercooler. This example was originally finished in Medium Canyon Red Glow, and it was stripped during the aforementioned refurbishment and refinished in Rosso Corsa with gloss black lower trim. Modifications include an HO Fibertrends fiberglass SVO hood with pins as well as a 1987-era Mustang fiberglass front bumper beam with Delrin spacers. A ding is noted on the upper rear spoiler.

White 17″ 5Zigen FN01R-C forged aluminum wheels are mounted with 245/40 Bridgestone AS980 tires. The suspension has been modified with a Maximum Motorsports K-member, Fox upper and lower control arms, SN95 front spindles, and front and rear coilover kits featuring Hyperco springs, plus Koni Fox double-adjustable struts and shocks. Koni SVO horizontal quad shocks are also fitted. Stopping power is provided by power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes featuring 13″ Baer Eradispeed+ two-piece drilled and slotted front rotors, red powder-coated Cobra dual-piston front calipers, and fabricated cooling ducts along with red powder-coated SVO rear calipers. A 1994 Cobra aluminum master cylinder was installed during the build. The left-rear hard line and caliper hose were replaced in 2022. The car is equipped with power steering and a Flaming River steering box.

The rear seats were removed to accommodate a rear roll bar, while Recaro Rally front sport seats upholstered in dark gray cloth were fitted up front. Custom replacement carpeting was also installed along with Simpson six-point harnesses, a Panasonic CD stereo, and Infinity Kappa speakers. The air conditioning system was converted to use R134a refrigerant, and a replacement Sanden compressor was installed in 2022. The driver’s power window motor was also replaced in 2022, and the passenger motor was replaced in September 2026. A crack is noted on the dashboard pad near the VIN tag.

The LeCarra three-spoke steering wheel is mounted to a lengthened Flaming River steering column. The rebuilt instrument cluster features white overlay dials and black pointers. A custom aluminum console plate holds an AutoMeter clock and pyrometer along with a memory vacuum/boost gauge featuring digital datalogging output. The five-digit odometer shows 20,000 miles, though total chassis mileage is unknown. A potential odometer rollover is noted on the Carfax report in March 2020.

The turbocharged inline-four was built in 2005 utilizing a 1986 SVO block that was bored 0.030″ over to displace 2.5 liters. Features include an Esslinger D-Port aluminum cylinder head, a roller camshaft, a Cometic MLS head gasket, Race Engineering forged turbo pistons, Crower 5.5″ forged rods, a Race Engineering lightened and cryo-quenched Force-5 crankshaft, ARP main studs, and a custom oil pickup and windage tray.

The Garrett Stage 3 T3/T4 turbocharger is paired with a Treadstone charge cooler with a Spearco core, and engine management is handled by a custom EEC calibration with a Zeitronix wideband datalogger. Cooling is provided by a custom dual-core aluminum radiator and a SPAL 16″ electric fan. The head gasket was replaced in 2008, and service in 2026 included replacing the valve cover gasket and spark plugs along with an oil change.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a BorgWarner T5 five-speed manual transmission with a 3.35:1 gear set as well as a PST carbon-fiber driveshaft, and a Ford 8.8″ rear end with a Torsen T2 differential, 4.10:1 gearing, and Moser 28-spline axles. A Spec 2+ clutch and a Fidanza 20-lb steel flywheel were also installed during the build. The custom 3″ exhaust system utilizes a Rod’s Headers manifold, a Stinger downpipe, a high-flow catalytic converter, and a MAC muffler and tubing. Additionally, chassis seams were stitch-welded, and subframe connectors were welded in.
