In Socuéllamos, you can climb a tower without ever leaving the world of wine. The Museo Torre del Vino occupies the town’s former railway station, but its most eye-catching feature is the improbable tower rising above it—a vertical tribute to the grape in the heart of La Mancha.

Opened in 2014, the museum explores Socuéllamos’s long relationship with viticulture, from grape cultivation and traditional winemaking to the science and rituals of tasting. Interactive displays and exhibitions make the subject considerably more entertaining than it sounds, while workshops involving aromas, wine painting, and, naturally, wine itself add a suitably convivial touch.

The best part comes at the top. A panoramic elevator carries visitors up the tower to a lookout offering sweeping views across the surrounding vineyards. From here, the famously flat Manchegan landscape suddenly makes perfect sense: this is a place where the horizon is enormous and the wine supply seemingly endless.
