The Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, has sparked reactions after describing Nigerians as ignorant about food safety during an interview with BusinessDay TV.

“We are very ignorant. We don’t read. We don’t understand,” Adeyeye said, stressing concerns about public awareness of food safety.

However, her remarks come at a time when Nigerians are increasingly raising concerns over fake, substandard and potentially unsafe products circulating in the market.

Many citizens are now questioning whether the focus should be on blaming consumers for their lack of awareness or on addressing how such products find their way into the hands of the public in the first place.

While educating consumers about food safety is important, Nigerians also expect NAFDAC to explain what it is doing to identify fake products, strengthen enforcement and protect the public from harmful goods.

The growing concern is simple: if consumers are expected to know what is safe, who is responsible for ensuring that unsafe products do not reach them?

For many Nigerians, the issue goes beyond reading labels or understanding food safety guidelines. It is also about accountability, effective regulation and confidence in the agencies entrusted with protecting public health.

As questions continue to mount, Nigerians are looking for clear answers and concrete action, not just explanations of what consumers do not know.
