The National Basketball Association (NBA) shared great news with all 30 teams about the future of the salary cap before the start of their 80th season.

The NBA’s 2026-27 season has officially been in effect since the end of June 2026, with all 30 teams reconstructing their NBA teams around the established salary cap limits laid out by the NBA.

While excitement for the new basketball season grows among fans, the league office has already set the salary cap for the 2027-28 season, and it’s better than anticipated.

The NBA announce a $2 million spike in the salary cap

The Athletic has revealed that the NBA has informed teams of their 2027-28 salary cap projections, setting a $176 million salary cap, with the luxury tax line at $213 million.

“The NBA has informed teams of its updated salary cap projections for the 2027-28 season, league sources tell @TheAthletic. $176 million salary cap, $213 million luxury tax line. The new projection comes in $2 million higher than the league’s last one.”

The previous projections presumed that the 2027-28 salary cap would be around $174 million, so this $2 million increase will lead to slight increases in contract values for players around the NBA.

This also implies that the 2027-28 salary cap’s first apron will come into effect at roughly $223 million, with the second apron coming in at around $236.5 million.

It is not an extra $2 million, but an additional amount that will be equitably shared with the players based on their already-agreed contracts, which tie in percentage-based annual increases or decreases.

The 2026-27 salary cap is at $164.9 million, with a luxury tax line of $200.4 million. The first apron comes in at $209 million, and the punitive second apron comes in for a payroll over $221.6 million.

This is a great sign for the vitality of the NBA and how profitable it continues to be every year.
