That philosophy comes from new series director Kai Ikarashi, who served as storyboard artist and animation director on season 1’s “Girl on Fire.” His use of light helped make it one of the series’ most visually distinctive and memorable episodes. Searing brightness visualizes the aging edgerunner Maine’s descent into cyberpsychosis (a form of psychological detachment caused by an overload of cybernetic augmentations), repeatedly isolating him in a bleached, featureless landscape before his story ends with an all-consuming fire.
