His movies are definitely hit or miss, but I never understood why this movie gets so much hate. It does definitely seem like people either love it or hate it with no in between.
Personally I always loved it, I felt like the atmosphere, music, and overall world building was done fantastically. The twists and deceptions were done well in my opinion and first time viewers never see them coming.
My biggest gripe was the “big reveal” of “those who we do not speak of”. It was definitely intended to be an intense scene but the monster was shown just a bit too, well frontally and directly lol.
But that’s really my only complaint. Never understood why so many people hated on this movie so much. Sure Shyamalan did make some questionable films (i.e. ATLA, and a few others..) but I never really felt like this was one.
