MGM+ has released a new trailer for an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s seminal 1883 novel, Treasure Island. The series’ first look reveals a direction that seems markedly different from the movie that is currently being developed by Ridley Scott, with Hugh Jackman attached to star.
As of July 2026, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Scott and Jackman were said to collaborate with Sony on their version of Treasure Island. The script for that movie was set to be written by Adolescence co-creator Jack Thorne. Jackman will reportedly play the role of Long John Silver in the adaptation.
Posting the trailer on X, MGM+ described the series as “A grittier voyage than the one you remember.” The trailer showcased its much darker take on Treasure Island, but did not shy away from visuals that are more reminiscent of the swashbuckling genre.

What happens in the Treasure Island trailer?Treasure Island seemingly takes a new approach to the classic tale. Jim Hawkins and his mother, Bess Hawkins, embark on a voyage after they lose their money at sea. While in the original story, Jim travels alone, the adaptation sees him bring along his mother, who is ready to be just as scrappy as the pirates in the story.
Of course, there cannot be an adaptation of Treasure Island without Long John Silver, who is as mutinous as in the original story. The trailer shows both Jim and Bess embark on a quest for ‘freedom’, as the treasure from the voyage is exactly the windfall that they need to alleviate their troubles.
Tom Sweet plays the protagonist of the story, Jim Hawkins. Hayley Atwell stars as Bess Hawkins. David Oyelowo plays Long John Silver, while Tomer Capone plays the other iconic character from the story, Billy Bones. Tristan Sturrock plays Captain Smollett, while Craige Els plays the role of the tragic Mr. Arrow. It is unknown if characters like Ben Gunn are going to be part of the adaptation.
The show will be available to stream on MGM+ on October 11, 2026.
