I get various press releases from the USA and many of them are quite dull – in fact the way many of these releases are written is very dull – but I am interested in how different countries do things differently. One of my many ideas for a book that was a good idea, but which I never progressed, was to visit a dozen European countries and find one environmental practice or policy that is everyday life for them but that we don’t do. A long time ago it would have been battery-recycling in Spain where one often came across public places where one could dump used batteries.

However, here are stories which made me think that one wouldn’t really see something like that in the UK. The first story does seem holistic in its approach but it’s always easier to be impressed by things you don’t know about than things you do, but I’d be surprised to see something like this from the NFU or even, in these terms, from the Soil Association. The Leopold awards are a good idea but for a naturalist, and Aldo Leopold certainly was one, it is difficult to discern the wildlife impacts of these farms. The last story – pig cuddling anyone? See what you think.
