Matrics who are looking to fund their studies for 2027 through National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) are running out of time as applications close on 31 October.

NSFAS APPLICATIONS CLOSING DATE APPROACHES, NO EXTENSION

The official closing date for NSFAS applications in 2027 is 31 October. The acting board chairperson for NSFAS said that the deadline will not be extended and the timetable iis deliberately rigid so the scheem can process applications, audit decisions and handle appeals before the start of the academic year.

Applications have already opened.

HOW TO APPLY

There is no application fee. You can submit your application online through the NSFAS website or through the mobile app. The mobile app is available on both Android and IOS. You will need to use the current 2027 forms for NSFS, not the old versions circulating on WhatsApp or other websites.

The NSFAS 2027 guidance says applicants won’t be asked to make an affidavit. Applicants will need to upload clear copies of every document that has been requested in order to reduce delays.

WHO QUALIFIES FOR NSFAS?

The Minsiter says the eligibility for NSFAS funding is dependant on the household in come and whether the student is eligible to study at an institution. If you’re unsure about the income threshold, you will need to check the criteria on the NSFAS website here before applying.

The post-deadline timeline is tight. NSFAS expects to have made final funding decisions by 30 November. From 1 to 9 December, they will audit these decisions. The appeal window runs from 10 to 24 December. The appeal outcomes are due by 9 January 2027 and institutions get the list of funded students by 11 January.

It is important to apply on time. NSFAS reportedly recieves 51 474 applications in the first four days. Applying early will give you time to fix any errors or get ahead of any potential delays.

The Department of Higher Education is also encouraging prospective students to consider Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges as another route to further education and skills development.
