Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Thursday officially launched the National Community Food Bank Programme for the South-East geopolitical zone.
The ceremony took place at the old Governor’s Lodge in Amawbia, Anambra State, and forms part of the Federal Government’s broader drive to enhance food security and social welfare nationwide.
The South-East zonal food bank is designed to support vulnerable groups facing economic hardship. It will provide essential food assistance and nutrition education to widows, the elderly, persons with disabilities, nursing mothers, and young children.
Tinubu described the programme as a core element of the Renewed Hope Initiative, focused on grassroots development, reducing hunger, and improving human capital indices.
She said it reinforces Federal Government policies aimed at tackling poverty, promoting sustainable agriculture, and strengthening social safety nets in Anambra and the wider South-East.
“It demonstrates a reinforced partnership between the Federal Government and the state governments of the region towards inclusive economic growth and societal welfare,” she added.
Anambra State Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo and his wife, Dr Nonye Soludo, received the First Lady at the event.
Beyond the food bank launch, Tinubu’s visit included the commissioning of a state-of-the-art Information and Communications Technology Centre at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.
The centre will equip youths with skills in software development, data analysis, and remote work.
The First Lady also noted that the engagements align with the Anambra State government’s humanitarian efforts, including the flag-off of empowerment grants, vocational tools, and agricultural inputs for thousands of beneficiaries across the state’s 21 local government areas.
