Super Eagles captain Victor Osimhen is set to undergo knee surgery after Galatasaray confirmed that scans found a loose body in his left knee, a setback that puts his availability for Nigeria’s next qualifiers in doubt.

The Turkish champions made this known in a statement on Friday, saying the striker suffered a strain in the knee during their 2-0 UEFA Champions League win over VfB Stuttgart at RAMS Park in Istanbul on Tuesday.

“Victor Osimhen sustained a strain in his left knee, and MRI examinations detected a loose body,” the club said. It added that he has been removed from the squad for Galatasaray’s next league match against Amed SK.

According to the statement, the 27-year-old will undergo arthroscopic surgery on Saturday at Maslak Acıbadem Hospital in Istanbul, to be performed by club doctor Yener İnce. “An arthroscopic knee surgery will be performed tomorrow,” the statement read.

Galatasaray did not give a return date. Reports in Nigeria, however, say Osimhen is expected to miss the Super Eagles’ 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Tanzania on November 13 and 17.

The injury is another blow for the forward, who recently returned from a groin strain that kept him out of three games for his club. He also missed Nigeria’s earlier qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar.

Osimhen has been one of Galatasaray’s key players this season, and the Super Eagles will be anxious about his condition as they try to pick up points in their qualifying group. Further updates on the severity of the injury and his recovery timeline are expected after the operation.
