Although Josh Jacobs is expected to make his return to the lineup on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, the Green Bay Packers are being highlighted as a team with potential interest in a trade for Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor ahead of the trade deadline.
According to Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport of ESPN, the Packers are among four teams with possible interest in a Taylor trade.
From Schefter and Rapoport: "The Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos and Vikings are among the teams that have pondered, or are expected to consider, the possibility of a trade for the star running back, according to sources."
Using the terms "have pondered" and "expected to consider" is not the strongest form of language to describe actual interest in a trade, and it could be a case where insiders are relaying what other teams think of the situation and who could be interested.
It does seem clear that the Colts are positioned to be sellers. Indianapolis is 2-4, coming off a home loss to the previously winless Tennessee Titans and now moving forward without long-time general manager Chris Ballard, who was fired to start the week. With the Nov. 10 trade deadline approaching, the Colts look like a team that could be sell off assets to help a coming roster rebuild, and Taylor would be a top prize.
Through six weeks, Taylor -- one of the best players in the history of the University of Wisconsin -- has 492 rushing yards, seven rushing touchdowns and 23 catches. The 27-year-old remains one of the NFL's most dynamic running backs.
As noted by Schefter and Rapoport, the Packers once explored a trade for Taylor before the 2023 season.
Taylor signed a two-year, $44 million contract extension with the Colts before the 2026 season. The deal included a $15 million signing bonus. Taylor is under contract through the 2028 season, with him due to a little over $16 million in 2027 and almost $18 million in 2028. It's possible the Packers could see Taylor as not only a short-term upgrade over Jacobs, who was arrested during the offseason and missed the first six games of the regular season while on the exempt list, but also the long-term solution at the running back position.
Among the other players considered to be trade targets for the Colts include guard Quentin Nelson and defensive linemen DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart. The Packers are loaded with draft picks in 2027 and could be willing to unload a few to help the 2026 team at the trade deadline.
