I keep running into image edits that somehow demand either too little software or far too much of it. Paint has grown considerably over the years, with layers, transparency, background removal, and other useful additions, but I still hit its ceiling when an edit gets fiddly. GIMP sits at the other end, with enough capability to serve as a full Photoshop replacement, ready to handle almost anything if I'm willing to bring its considerably larger toolbox along for the ride.
