The Pittsburgh Penguins will renew one of the NHL’s most storied rivalries tonight when they visit the Washington Capitals.

Pittsburgh enters the matchup looking to bounce back after a 3-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Monday, while Washington is 1-1-0 through its first two games. The Capitals opened the season with a win over the Carolina Hurricanes before falling to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday.

This will be the first of four meetings between the longtime rivals this season, but this matchup carries added significance. Alex Ovechkin announced Monday that he plans to retire after the 2026-27 season, meaning there are only a handful of chances left to watch Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby face off.

The rivalry has been one of the NHL’s defining storylines for more than two decades, with Crosby and Ovechkin meeting in every season since 2005-06.

SportsNet Pittsburgh will provide live coverage of the matchup between the Penguins and the Capitals.
