THE PHILIPPINES will host the 54th ASEAN Banking Council Meeting next week, where banking leaders from the region will discuss artificial intelligence (AI) and its effects on the financial industry.
The event, which will be hosted by the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP), will be held on Nov. 12-14 at Makati Shangri-La Manila with the theme “AI-Driven Banking in ASEAN: Securing Our Future Together.”
This will mark the third time the Philippines will host the ASEAN Banking Council Meeting, with previous gatherings held here in 2004 and 2014.
The BAP is the lead organization of universal and commercial banks in the country.
“As AI becomes increasingly integrated into banking, financial institutions are exploring its use to enhance customer experiences, streamline operations, strengthen fraud detection, and improve risk assessment. These advances also raise critical questions about data privacy, cybersecurity, accountability, and the governance of AI-driven systems,” the group said.
“For ASEAN banks, the challenge is to ensure that technological progress translates into meaningful benefits for customers and businesses without compromising the safety, reliability, and trust that underpin financial services.”
The meeting is in line with efforts to advance banking cooperation in the region. It is held under the umbrella of the ASEAN Bankers Association, which includes banking associations from 11 ASEAN member states, that aims to promote cooperation and the exchange of knowledge among banking communities in Southeast Asia on industry priorities and developments affecting the financial sector.
The BAP said this year’s theme emphasizes the balance between innovation in financial services and responsibility.
“It underscores the need for banks to develop the capabilities to use AI effectively while maintaining robust safeguards against emerging risks. As digital services and financial transactions become more interconnected across markets, cooperation among banking institutions and associations will be important in sharing expertise, strengthening risk management, and promoting responsible approaches to technology adoption,” it said.
“For a region with diverse banking systems and different stages of digital development, collaboration can help ensure that the benefits of AI are pursued alongside sound governance, customer protection, and financial stability. Regional dialogue also creates opportunities for banking leaders to exchange perspectives on common challenges and consider how their institutions can adapt to technological change while preserving confidence in the financial system.”
The group said that as host, the BAP is looking to foster dialogue among banking communities in the region, especially as emerging technologies like AI affect the financial industry’s development.
“The meeting also reinforces the importance of the ABA as a platform for regional banking associations to engage on shared concerns and work toward a more connected, resilient, and future-ready banking sector,” it added. — Aaron Michael C. Sy
