The popular Star Trek show is getting ready for its last season. Its bosses have teased a major connection to the original series.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will lean further into its connection with Star Trek: The Original Series in Season 5. Speaking with TV Insider, executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers discussed the direction of the final episodes. The season will introduce Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy and Hikaru Sulu, adding two more members of the classic crew. It will also build toward James T. Kirk taking command of the Enterprise from Christopher Pike.

Myers explained that the creative team wants the final season to feel closer to classic Star Trek. He said, “We want to do a real classic sense of Trek as we exit, and that’s kind of what we do.” Myers also described the final season as increasingly “TOS adjacent,” highlighting its connection to the original show.

Goldsman and Myers’ comments point to a final season that will increasingly resemble the classic series. The show will use its final episodes to bring Strange New Worlds closer to the era established by The Original Series.

How the final season connects Strange New Worlds to The Original Series

The Season 4 finale already created a direct link between the two eras through Uhura. Celia Rose Gooding’s character became trapped at the center of an anomaly involving a black hole and a white hole. The anomaly allowed the Strange New Worlds and The Original Series versions of Uhura to communicate. The two initially spoke before eventually switching places.

Their encounter also leads to a touching moment involving the original Uhura and Pike, played by Anson Mount. The two versions later lose their ability to communicate, but they continue working together to solve the problem.

The storyline also sets the stage for the final season. As Strange New Worlds approaches its ending, its characters and story will move increasingly closer to the world viewers first encountered in the classic series.
